After travelling Italy for the past 15 years, and being fortunate enough to taste the diversity of its regional cuisine, I think it is safe to say that there truly is no “Best” restaurant in Italy.  However, there is a Best restaurant for every variety of regional cuisine, style of dining, and type of establishment in Italy. To give value to our many beloved restaurants across Italy each post on the Best Restaurants in Italy will focus on a style of cuisine paired with the experience of dining at each of our Best Restaurants in Italy.

EATING IN SPOLETO

This fall Giovanni and I travelled to the hilltop town of Spoleto in Umbria, which is also the World UNESCO heritage site of Basilica di San Salvatore.  Spoleto is a beautiful and enchanting town full of history and its streets are lined with many fine establishments that any lover of Italian food would be happy to have a meal at. But after a long day of Urban trekking through the streets of Spoleto we were looking to relax and experience some truly authentic Umbrian cuisine.  Taking our usual route off-the-beaten track we travelled down an unlit country road 10 minutes outside the city centre to find “Il Capanno”. Inside the décor is what I would call refined rustic with an perfect balance of stone and wooden beams.  The menu is well thought out elevating traditional dishes with an elegant wine list to match.  From the fresh porcini mushrooms to the pigeon each dish was rich in flavour and every ingredient a perfect representation of the territory.

Simply put, Il Capanno is the “Best Restaurant in Italy” for Rustic refined cuisine this side of Umbria.

GLUTEN-FREE FRIENDLY

Il Capanno is not only listed as one of the Top Restaurants in all of Italy, according Gambero Rosso, but it is also Gluten-free friendly.  As always be sure to call ahead of time to let the staff know so that they are prepared and ready to make you a G-Free that is rustically refined and gourmet Gluten-Free.  If you are unsure about making reservations, need help trip planning, that is where we come in.  When you travel Gluten-Free with us we are always happy to help you make reservations to ensure you a G-Free trip without the dining drama.

HOW TO REACH IL CAPANNO

If you are adventurous like us and want to experience the best Italy has to offer, we recommend visiting Il Capanno.  A visit to Il Capanno requires a car and GPS for those unfamiliar with the country roads around Spoleto.  Don’t have a car, or GPS in Italy, but still want to eat at the best spots and have an authentic experience, then head over here or contact us at info@theitalianontour.com to help you find the best itinerary for you.  We take the guess work out of planning the ultimate culinary and cultural vacation to Italy!
