You’ll never forget your first time trying Italian Gelato! Gelato is an Italian cultural treasure, popularized in movies like Audrey Hepburn’s Roman Holiday and in books like Eat Pray Love. Italy is home to over 39,000 gelaterias, while Rome itself is home to over 2,000 – yet most tourists will never get to taste real artisanal gelato!

Gelato Turistico runs rampant in Italy’s tourist destinations, and Rome is certainly no exception. This “gelato” is made with artificial additives and cheap vegetable fats. How do you tell the difference? Gelato turistico is often brightly colored and filled with artificial additives, colorants, and preservatives. Another giveaway is an off-season fruit flavor.

As compared to ice cream, gelato contains up to 8% less milk fat and is stored at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream. Gelato also incorporates less air, making it denser and packed with flavor that effortlessly dissolves on your tongue.

If you want to be one of the few who will experience the magic of real, authentic, artisanal Italian gelato in Rome, you’re in the right place!

When in Rome, do as the Romans do—and that includes indulging in the world of Italian wine! A wine bar, or “enoteca,” as it’s known in Italy, is a specialized retail shop and tasting room that allows customers to sample certain wines before purchasing. It is also a place of gathering and socializing for Italians.

Fatamorgana Nemorense

Via Lago di Lesina, 9/11

1-11 PM Tuesday-Sunday

1-9 PM Monday

Maria Agnese Spagnuolo from Puglia founded Fatamorgana after a childhood of Celiac Disease prevented her from eating her favorite dessert–gelato. Due to the additives and other processed ingredients present in many gelatos, Fatamorgana set out to create a gluten-free version of this Italian delicacy.

Their gelato has been made the same way for generations with authentic, high-quality ingredients and free of any highly processed artificial flavors or colors. With 66 gluten-free flavors and 24 vegan options, there’s something for everyone at this family-owned gelato shop! We recommend any of the fruit sorbets, the Crema Agnese with double caramel, or La La Land, which is sheep’s ricotta made with Williams pears from Marsala and chocolate.

Hedera

Borgo Pio, 179

11 AM – 11 PM Monday – Sunday

Made with high-quality ingredients, free of preservatives, and following a slow-food philosophy, Hedera serves just twelve signature flavors of creams and fruit sorbets out of its ivy-covered building in the heart of Borgo Pio just outside of the Fontana dell’Acqua Marcia.

Made from organic milk and cream, their signature flavors of cream-based gelato include a decadent Roman Hazelnut, Bronte Pistachio ( from Sicily), and a smooth Calabrian Liqueur. The fruit sorbets are made using seasonal fruits and have a minimum of 51% fruit content.

They also serve up Italian Granita, which is similar to Italian Ice but with a more snow-like consistency. One of the granitas is coffee-flavored and served with whipped cream!
